Becoming a Professional Engineer (Pr.Eng) is a significant milestone in any qualified engineer’s career.

It is not just a milestone and fancy tag to put in front, behind or below your name on LinkedIn;

It is a transformative step in an engineer’s career that signifies dedication, expertise, and a commitment to the standards of the profession.

Understanding the PR.Eng Registration

Becoming a registered Professional Engineer (Pr.Eng) is more than just a formality—it is the gateway to legally practicing engineering in Zimbabwe.

Think of becoming a Professional Engineer (Pr.Eng) as the same getting your driver’s license for engineering—without it, you can’t legally drive a project forward.

Here is what sets a Pr.Eng apart from non-registered engineers:

1. Legally Practice as an Engineer

Just as you need a driver’s license to drive on the road, you need a Pr.Eng registration to work legally in the capacity of an engineer without a Licensed supervisor.

Without it, practicing as an engineer is against the law, and you could face penalties

2. Sign Off on Engineering Projects:

Only a Pr.Eng can sign and approve engineering designs.

This ensures compliance with safety standards and regulations, which non-registered engineers cannot do

3. Protect Public Safety and Ensure Quality

A non-registered engineer can help with the calculations and even the design aspects, but it is the Pr.Eng who has the authority to make decisions and take responsibility for the project’s safety, cost, and outcome

It is also a safety measure on the government’s side to ensure engineers understand the risk and know they are risking their career if they do anything wrong, hence they will strive not to.

As a non-registered engineer it is illegal for you to make technical decisions that are binding on a project.

Step-by-Step Registration Process

1. Attain Eligibility

Academic Qualifications: To qualify for Pr.Eng registration, you must hold a recognized engineering degree qualification, meaning your education needs to be at Bachelors level
Professional Experience: A minimum of three years of relevant post-university experience is required

Note: If you’re already a member of another recognized engineering institution and also a C.Eng / CP.Eng / P.Eng / Pr.Eng of another recognized country you can go to step 2 and skip step 3.

2. Download Application Forms & Gather your documents

M1 Application: Obtain and fill out the M1 Application form, and M2 Sponsorship form from ZIE’s website. Ensure your details are clear and accurate. They want you to use black ink and block letters for legibility.
Documentation: Gather certified copies of
- all relevant academic qualifications and your transcript,
- any membership certificates from other professional bodies, and
- a comprehensive CV detailing your work experience and skills.
- 2 Passport size photographs

3. Craft Your Reports for Submission

Training and Experience Report: Craft a detailed timeline report that chronicles your engineering training and experience. This should encompass all relevant projects and roles you’ve held throughout your career.
Technical Project Report: Craft a detailed technical report that zooms in on one project. This report is critical in demonstrating your engineering capabilities. It should detail a specific project you’ve worked on, showcasing your role, responsibilities, and the technical challenges you faced. Make sure to follow. ZIE’s guidelines closely to meet their expectations

4. Get Sponsorship

Your application must be supported by three ZIE Corporate Members in good standing. This will be done on the M1 form and then aswell, these sponsors will attest to your qualifications and character through the M2 form.
All you will have to do is forward the forms to them and they append their signatures.

5. Pay Your Fees and Submit Your Application

Once you are done with your reports and every other administrative requirement you will then proceed to request an invoice from ZIE and pay the application fees.
It was $75 for me as I was already a Graduate member, however, a mate of mine was not, and he paid $90.
Submit the required files as a zipped folder and email to ZIE

6. Prepare for the Interview

After your application is reviewed, you will be invited for an interview. This period can take anywhere from a month to 3 months depending on the number of applicants available in the pool.
Take this time to review your documents, practicing common interview questions, and being ready to discuss the details of your technical project
