    1Getting to Know You:

The panel will start by seeking to understand who you are and what your professional journey, motivations, and aspirations are made of.

This initial discussion sets the tone and helps the interviewers gauge your passion and commitment to the field.

2 – Assessing Your Training Report:

The interview will delve into your training experiences, scrutinizing how these experiences have prepared you for professional practice.

Be ready to discuss specific training experiences, skills acquired, and how these have been applied in real-world situations.

3 – Evaluating Your Technical Project Report:

The panel will then thoroughly review your documented engineering project, presenting you with questions at almost the turn of every page.

They will seek to understand your role in the project, the challenges you faced, and how you addressed them “AS AN ENGINEER”.

4 – Reviewing Your Current Occupation or Venture:

The Panel will also discuss your current professional role and responsibilities to ensure they align with professional standards.

Be prepared to explain your current projects, responsibilities, and how they demonstrate your readiness for professional registration.

You need to be an expert in compliance and regulations of your field, trust me.

    The Nature of Interview

    1 – in-Person or Virtual

Depending on circumstances, the interview can be conducted in person or virtually.

    2 – Panel Interview

You will be interviewed by a panel of Professional Engineers (Pr.Engs). This means, its you taking questions from multiple individuals.

The panel will include at least one member from your specific discipline, and others from related fields such as Electrical, Electronic, Mechatronic, or perhaps Civil , Structural and Geo-technical engineering based on your degree.

    Preparation Tips

1 – Study Materials and Reference Books

YOU DONT NEED ANY STUDY BOOKS, you need to ensure you are very familiar with the reports you have submitted. Your ability to discuss these in detail will be crucial.

However, you need to make sure you are also familiar with the following codes:

    1. The ZIE Act (1987) and SI 88 of 1987
    2. The Engineering Council Act 27:22;
    3. SI 161 of 2010 and SI 153 of 2012
    4. The ZIE Code of Conduct

P.S: Although not explicitly tested, having a good understanding of the codes relevant to your field is beneficial. This knowledge reflects your readiness for professional practice.

2 – Key Topics and Areas of Knowledge

Be prepared for questions that cover both technical and non-technical areas.

The panel may probe into specifics of your engineering discipline, so be on your toes and ready to discuss your projects and experiences in detail.

3 – Mock Interviews and Practice

Conducting mock interviews is crucial for enhancing your confidence and performance, as it allows you to practice articulating your thoughts clearly and effectively

Focus on visualizing yourself in the shoes of the panelists and try to critique and ask yourself, “If I was interviewing someone to become an Engineer, what would I be interested in knowing and asking them to assess if they were competent enough to wear the badge of PROFESSIONAL ENGINEER”

OH and another important thing Seek Feedback from Peers or Mentors on both your reports and your knowledge depth. Sometimes you find people who have amazing technical knowledge and skills failing to become Professional Engineers, not because they don’t know their “stuff” but because they are not able to articulate and coherently present their knowledge in front of others.

Peers and Mentors act as your safe space to horne your articulation and presentation skills before you actually get to the grand stage.

    Interview

    What to Expect

Extensive Grilling: Be prepared for an intensive evaluation of your knowledge and experiences. The panel will ask probing questions to assess your technical competence and professional readiness. If you are not well prepared you might fumble and lose your train of thought, so be battle ready.

Dress Code: At a minimum, wear smart casual attire or a working engineer’s uniform. Your appearance should reflect professionalism and respect for the interview process, however, most interviews post 2020 now can be and are conducted virtually but you will still have to show up as a professional as you will have your camera on.

Duration: The interview typically lasts between 40 – 50 minutes and the questions will cover technical knowledge, ethical scenarios, and professional conduct. Be ready to demonstrate your understanding and application of engineering principles, as well as your commitment to ethical practices within this time however you might take more or less time based on your competence or lack thereof.
