The Nature of Interview
1 – in-Person or Virtual
Depending on circumstances, the interview can be conducted in person or virtually.
2 – Panel Interview
You will be interviewed by a panel of Professional Engineers (Pr.Engs). This means, its you taking questions from multiple individuals.
The panel will include at least one member from your specific discipline, and others from related fields such as Electrical, Electronic, Mechatronic, or perhaps Civil , Structural and Geo-technical engineering based on your degree.
Preparation Tips
1 – Study Materials and Reference Books
YOU DONT NEED ANY STUDY BOOKS, you need to ensure you are very familiar with the reports you have submitted. Your ability to discuss these in detail will be crucial.
However, you need to make sure you are also familiar with the following codes:
- The ZIE Act (1987) and SI 88 of 1987
- The Engineering Council Act 27:22;
- SI 161 of 2010 and SI 153 of 2012
- The ZIE Code of Conduct

Sometimes you find people who have amazing technical knowledge and skills failing to become Professional Engineers, not because they don’t know their “stuff” but because they are not able to articulate and coherently present their knowledge in front of others.
Peers and Mentors act as your safe space to horne your articulation and presentation skills before you actually get to the grand stage.

What to Expect

Dress Code: At a minimum, wear smart casual attire or a working engineer’s uniform. Your appearance should reflect professionalism and respect for the interview process, however, most interviews post 2020 now can be and are conducted virtually but you will still have to show up as a professional as you will have your camera on.
Duration: The interview typically lasts between 40 – 50 minutes and the questions will cover technical knowledge, ethical scenarios, and professional conduct. Be ready to demonstrate your understanding and application of engineering principles, as well as your commitment to ethical practices within this time however you might take more or less time based on your competence or lack thereof.
